Renting Out Your RV for Burning Man

Written by Rachel Simpson

Anyone looking to rent out their RV for extra cash needs to be very smart about how they market their rental. If you plan your promotions and marketing around big annual and seasonal events like Burning Man, you can easily offset the costs of owning your RV.  As many private renters are unwilling to rent their RV out for music festivals, adding a note to your listing that your vehicle is festival friendly is great way to take advantage of another opportunity to secure a booking.

What is Burning Man?

Burning Man is an annual gathering with approx. 70,000 participants that takes place at Black Rock City—a temporary city erected in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada (120 miles north of Reno, Nevada). The event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by 10 main principles: “radical” inclusion, self-reliance, self-expression, as well as community cooperation, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leaving no trace. For more information see www.burningman.org.

When is Burning Man?

It is always held the week prior to and including Labor Day. For 2018: August 26 to September 3.

Why rent for Burning Man?

Increased rental income: There is a big demand for RVs, especially in California and Nevada, from people all over the world travelling to the US for this event. Rates are highly increased by all commercial operators and the demand for RV’s is very high every year.

What are the drawbacks of renting for Burning Man?

Dirty: The event is held in the desert, where the soil is called ‘Playa Dust’. This is dried, packed and ground up alkali lake bed dust. It’s particles are so minuscule (about 3 times finer than talcum powder) that it gets on and into everything. This means that everything, including the RV, gets very dirty. The best way to clean off the alkaline dust is using a water/vinegar mix.
Service: We also strongly recommend servicing the RV afterwards (engine and generator oil, oil filter and air filter change).

How can I rent my RV for Burning Man?

Please be aware that Mighway Local listings are set as available during the dates of this event. Simply log into the owner’s portal to update the vehicle description, availability and seasonal rate to reflect if your vehicle can be taken to Burning Man or not.

If you are a Mighway Managed owner, your listing on our platform says ‘No Burning Man’ and the dates from August 25 to August 31, 2018, will be blocked from renting. If you would like to rent for Burning Man please let us know and we will make it available for those dates and advertise it as such.

We encourage you to consider renting your RV for Burning Man, as it’s a great opportunity to earn increased rental income due to the high demand for RVs, especially in California and Nevada states. People who have been to the Festival already know the scarcity of RV rentals for that period and have started to reserve their RV rentals already. Keep in mind that you may want to raise your cleaning fee and seasonal rate unless you are renting to individuals that you trust, especially given the eccentric nature of numerous music festivals. Burning Man Festival is an event that guarantees your vehicle will come back covered in dust and needing a service, so you can also consider creating a music festival add-on to offset any extra costs incurred.
