Things To Do In Auckland

Auckland City
Written by Nicole

Hiring a campervan is one of the best ways to explore any destination. There is the freedom travel where you want, and when you want. But, often it can be difficult to know where to spend your time. So, if you are hiring a campervan from Auckland, here is a list of things to do while you’re in the City of Sails.

Giapo

Our favourite part of hiring a campervan is getting on the road, and stopping for ice cream – guilt free. So, our first destination is Giapo. The team here know how to take a traditional dessert and put a modern spin on it. They are expressive with their ice cream, but also offer all the crowd favourites. Pop into their store to see what creations they have.

Devonport

The ferry is a great way to see Auckland and enjoy fresh air. So, park up your campervan and head to the downtown ferry terminal. From here, you can catch the ferry from the CBD across to Devonport Wharf. The journey is only short and will take you less than half an hour.

The main streets of Devonport are lined with small cafes, shops, antiques stores and bars. Once you hop off the ferry, the roads will lead you inland towards Mount Victoria. Walk the grassy slopes of the volcanic mountain and enjoy views of the Aucklands bright lights, the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf. This spot is great if you have hired a campervan, and you are travelling out of the big smoke.

Mount Eden

If you are seeking something spectacular, then your next stop is Mount Eden. Just 5km from the city centre, you can climb the highest mainland volcano. This walk is just an easy 2km and will take about an hour to complete.

Once you reach the top, you will have a perfect 360° view of Auckland. You’re safe too, Mount Eden hasn’t erupted in at least 15,000 years.

Muriwai Beach

Once you have collected your campervan, drive to Muriwai Beach. This rugged black-sand beach is located just 40-minutes from Auckland’s CBD and is worth the journey. Muriwai stretches for 50 kilometres, and as you stroll, you can watch the surfers and kite surfers in action while dipping your feet in the whitewash.

Once you reach the end of the beach, head towards the gannet colony. A short track will take you right up to the viewing platform. During August to march each year, you can see around 1,200 pairs of gannets nesting. It is truly spectacular.

Tree Adventures

While you’re at Muriwai, take the little monkeys for a swing amongst the trees. Tree Adventures offers a high ropes course, with 10 different options to choose from. This great activity is appropriate for all ages and keeps the little adventurers entertained for hours!

La Cigale Markets

Bonjour! If you are visiting Auckland during the weekend, you must visit the La Cigale French Markets. These markets are famous in Auckland and have been voted Auckland’s best food markets for the last 7 years. Every Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy fresh pastries, paella, clothing and crafts.

Mission Bay

Eat, sleep, roller skate, repeat. Drive your campervan along the road to Mission Bay. This popular spot hums all year round. Visitors and locals alike enjoy the parks, restaurants and the beach. It’s also well known for the iconic water fountain and views across the Waitemata Harbour.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy here. Roller skate from Mission Bay to St Heliers, or hire a paddle board from the local board shop. It is a great spot to spend your day – rain or shine.

Hiring a campervan in Auckland gives you the freedom to visit some of the greatest spots. And, these are only a few of the things you can do while on the road. Make sure you take your time and enjoy everything Auckland has to offer.
