My favourite spot: New Chums Beach

My favourite spot in New Zealand has to be New Chums beach on the North Island’s Coromandel Peninsula. There are so many contenders for this title, with stunning examples on every coast but New Chums is like a little oasis!

Just over two hours from Auckland, to get to New Chums, you drive along Highway 25 taking in some breath-taking scenery before arriving in Whangapoua, an idyllic beach town, nestled close to the tip of the Coromandel.

New Chums is hidden on the other side of Whangapoua’s main beach. Follow the rocks on the far left hand side until a path appears in the bluff. The rugged trail takes you through the bush and in about 30 minutes, you are rewarded with your first glimpse at one of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches!

Only accessible by foot or boat, it’s not visited by large groups of people on kayak tours as some of the Abel Tasman beaches are. The lush trees and foliage surround the entire bay providing a wonderful backdrop and makes it feel even more secluded.

When visiting early on a summer’s morning, we were the only people on the beach. With nothing but the sound of waves it feels like your very own secret paradise. As my mate Dave Dobbyn would say “she’s a slice of heaven”.
